Who it suits
Tortoiseshell borrows from spectacle frames and hair clips: amber with darker chocolate patches floating inside it. Because the layers stay translucent, the colour shifts with the light, which is more interesting than a flat brown. Short square suits it, since the pattern reads better across a wide flat surface. Warm browns like this sit easily with gold and with tan leather.
Wearing it
Translucency is the forgiving part here. There is no solid block of colour meeting your cuticle, so growth is gentle and the pattern absorbs it. Short square edges are sturdy around housework and do not catch on fabric, though square corners can feel sharp for the first day. Ask for a heavier chocolate ratio if you want it darker, or a lighter amber for summer.
